In recent news, the National Privacy Commission (NPC) confirmed data breaches at Toyota's Makati branch and Robinsons Malls in the Philippines.

Here's what we know so far:

  • Toyota Makati: The breach, discovered on May 29, compromise personal data from 2016 to 2024, including full names, addresses, bank documents, valid IDs, email addresses, and photographs.

  • Robinsons Malls: Approximately 107,000 customers' personal data from the Robinsons Malls app were exposed, leaking full names, email addresses, mobile numbers, birth dates, genders, provinces, cities, and registration dates.

These breaches underscore the fact that companies, regardless of size, can suffer from security incidents that range from data breaches caused by negligence to targeted cyberattacks.

Globally, data breaches have been on the rise, with notable cases such as the Equifax breach in 2017, affecting over 147 million people, and the Marriott breach in 2018, impacting 500 million guests. These breaches result in significant financial losses and damage to reputation.

The NPC consistently reminds companies to stay vigilant and plan ahead for these kinds of business risks. It is never too late to get started, and one way to begin your data governance and protection initiatives is by visiting the free resources of the NPC at https://privacy.gov.ph/.
